Posting Salary: $75,500 – $88,500 commensurate with experience.
The Acquisitions Editor is an experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions seeks out work independently, under minimum supervision. Under general direction, has responsibility for developing the strategic growth plan and list strategy for at least one large or two small publishing programs, acquiring up to 25 titles per year including meeting specific annual signing and transmittal goals. Develops a publishing strategy for the field(s) in which they operate and identifies, develops, and publishes titles that demonstrate high scholarly standards and achieve profit and growth targets. Conceives of book ideas. Identifies, seeks out and interviews scholarly authors for the purpose of obtaining manuscripts and proposals. Judges whether or not the projects are publishable editorially and financially. Obtains critical reviews from authoritative readers, judges the critical readings and rejects the manuscript or presents them before the faculty Editorial Committee. Negotiates contract terms that meet press financial targets. The Editor has thorough knowledge of the publishing process, including the form of a manuscript acceptable for production, design and various production and sales promotions.

Under general direction, develops the strategic growth plan, list strategy, including the management of backlist titles, and conceives new book and journal ideas for at least one large or several small publishing programs.
Develops contacts and working relationships with scholars within the assigned subject matter for the purpose of obtaining manuscripts. Obtains critical readings and rejects manuscripts or recommends for publication. Prepares analysis for editorial and financial feasibility for presentation to editorial committee to build case for proposed titles.
In consultation with a more senior acquisition editor, negotiates approved for publishing contracts. Coordinates preparation of final manuscripts through copy editing and production stages. Collaborate with journal publishing managers to acquire and develop titles in subject areas.
Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Proven knowledge of scholarly publishing; 3-5 years of experience acquiring books in trade or scholarly publishing.
Entrepreneurial skills to identify, create, develop, and evaluate book concepts and proposals and backlist strategies that have a high degree of editorial or financial impact.
Skills in understanding and using financial models to determine and demonstrate financial viability and goals of assigned projects.
Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external parties.
Analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem resolution skills. Strong negotiation skills.
Knowledge and understanding of industry standards for editorial acquisitions to successfully manage book projects through all stages of the publishing process (including publishing contracts; negotiating terms, the form of manuscript acceptable for production, etc).
Has capability to fundraise for book projects.
